Monitoring papertrail with webhooks

Integrating papertrail and webhooks with your monitoring system

To integrate papertrail and webhooks with your monitoring system, please reach out to MetricFire. Book a demo with the MetricFire team to discuss integrating papertrail and webhooks and how that can support your monitoring system.

What is papertrail?

Create Papertrail Alerts to Forward Metrics to Hosted Graphite

Papertrail, now owned by Solarwinds, is a log management service which allows you to manage logs from apps, servers, and cloud services with the use of alerts and events. All you need to get started is an account in Papertrail and an account on Hosted Graphite. Check out the Papertrail documentation for more details on how to create Papertrail alerts that will publish Graphite metrics to your HG account.

When you create an alert in Papertrail, it will use a keyword to track the specified events and occurrences in your logs. A Graphite metric will be created and forwarded to your HG account and you can use these metrics to create custom dashboards and alerts.

This will forward data to your Hosted Graphite account, which you can then use to create dashboards and alerts:

What is webhooks?

Use Webhooks to Forward Events and Notifications to your MetricFire Account

With MetricFire, you can use Webhooks in three different ways. First, you can use webhooks generated in your Hosted Graphite account to connect to 3rd party platforms and services, including CircleCi, Pingdom, GitHub, GitLab, Sentry, and more. This will import events from your services to the Hosted Graphite backend that can be viewed as annotations. See our Add-Ons and integrations docs for more details per service.

Second, you can use custom Webhooks as a programmatic notification method for when an alert is triggered. See the Hosted Graphite Alerting Guide for more information.

Third, you can monitor the performance of your application's webhook endpoints using the Telegraf agent:

  1. Install the Telegraf Agent on any servers/systems that are hosting your MongoDB instances. See our Telegraf docs for detailed instructions on installing the agent and configuring it to forward metrics to your MetricFire account.
  2. Now you can configure Telegraf's http_response input plugin. See our handy blog article for detailed instructions HERE, and the official GiHub repository HERE
  3. Then just restart Telegraf to see new metrics appear in your MetricFire account's Metrics Search UI
  4. You can use these metrics to create Dashboard panels and Graphite alerts
