Monitoring SNMP Network Devices with Graphite

Integrating SNMP Network Devices and Graphite with your monitoring system

To integrate SNMP Network Devices and Graphite with your monitoring system, please reach out to MetricFire. Book a demo with the MetricFire team to discuss integrating SNMP Network Devices and Graphite and how that can support your monitoring system.

What is SNMP Network Devices?

Collect and Forward SNMP Network Metrics with the Telegraf Agent

Telegraf is a plugin-driven server agent built on InfluxDB, and can be used for collecting and sending statistics from servers, databases, processes, devices, and a range of 3rd party technology platforms. It is compatible with most operating systems, and has many useful output plugins and input plugins for collecting and forwarding a wide variety of performance metrics. Follow these steps to get started:

  1. Install the Telegraf Agent onto the servers/systems managing your SNMP networking environment. See our Telegraf docs for detailed instructions on installing the agent and configuring it to forward metrics to a MetricFire account.
  2. Once Telegraf has been configured to forward metrics to our Hosted Graphite endpoint, you can configure Telegraf's SNMP input plugin. See the official GiHub repository HERE, and our handy blog article HERE for more details and configuration options.
  3. Now just restart Telegraf to see new metrics appear in your MetricFire account's Metrics Search UI.
  4. You can use these metrics to create new Dashboard panels and Graphite alerts.

You configure the plugin by specifying the SNMP agent's address (the target device), and optionally the SNMP community string (for public or SNMPv1/SNMPv2c):

Then define the MIBs (Management Information Bases) you wish to query. Each metric field must be configured manually, and a list of OIDs/MIBs can be seen in the output of a snmpwalk command like: snmpwalk -v2c -c public localhost .

Example dashboard:

In addition to SNMP and SNMP Trap, Telegraf offers additional plugins that are more hardware specific (Cisco/Junos), such as Cisco GNMI Telemetry, Cisco Model-driven Telemetry, gNMI, Arista LANZ Consumer, and JTI OpenConfig Telemetry.

What is Graphite?

Graphite is an open-source and highly scalable, real-time graphing system for time-series data. The metrics and data that you send to Graphite’s carbon endpoint are timestamped, and can be graphed using a basic dashboard interface. Graphite is an efficient method of collecting data, is well documented, and is easy to work with.

Hosted Graphite has improved upon standard Graphite and offers additional tools and features that provide our customers with a robust and well-rounded monitoring solution.

  1. We handle the aggregation, storage, and backups of your data. We have built-in features like Data Views and Aggregation Rules, and offer a list of API's for programatic management of your monitoring environment.
  2. Send server metrics from your running instances, custom metrics from within your application code, and integration metrics from other popular services that we integrate with, like Heroku, AWS, Azure, and GCP.
  3. Visualize your data in meaningful ways with customizable dashboards that look awesome!
  4. Configure alerts to your metrics and integrate with popular notification channels such as Email, Slack, Pager Duty, Microsoft Teams, and OpsGenie.
  5. We have fast and friendly support and are dedicated to making sure you get the highest possible value from our services.

Hosted Graphite by MetricFire takes away the burden of self-hosting your own monitoring solution, allowing you more time and freedom to work on your most important tasks. You can measure, analyze, and visualize large amounts of data from your applications and infrastructure without the hassles of setting up your own servers, worrying about scaling, storing data, alerting, or maintenance.

What is MetricFire?

MetricFire is a full-scale platform that provides infrastructure, system, and application monitoring using a suite of open-source tools. We will aggregate and store your data as time series metrics, which can be used to build custom dashboards and alerts. MetricFire takes away the burden of self-hosting your own monitoring solution, allowing you more time and freedom to work on your most important tasks.

MetricFire offers a complete ecosystem of end-to-end infrastructure monitoring, comprised of open-source Graphite and Grafana. MetricFire handles the aggregation, storage, and backups of your data, and offers alerting, team features, and API's for easy management of your monitoring environment. You can send server metrics using one of our agents, custom metrics from within your application code, and integration metrics from a variety of popular 3rd party services that we integrate with like Heroku, AWS, Azure, GCP, and many more!

Our Hosted Graphite product has improved upon standard Graphite to add data dimensionality, optimized storage, and offers additional tools and features that provide customers with a robust and well-rounded monitoring solution.
